Profile of political activist Indian English writer Sanjoy Hazarika from Assam

Among those Assamese writers  who gained popularity through writing in English language Sanjoy Hazarika is one of the most recognized writers along with Arup Duta. Sanjoy Hazarika's political views reflect that of the most thoughtful and of the one who genuinely feels for the people of Assam and North Eastern region. There are a few hard-core followers of Hazarika who grabs every opportunity to hear a comment from the writer on issues related to Assam and to buy each of his books.


Life and profile of Sanjoy Hazarika
Sanjoy Hazarika was born in Shillong, erstwhile capital of Assam, in 1954. His educational life spreaded  in several well-known places like Shillong itself , London and Cambridge, Massachusetts and at Harvard University. Sanjoy Hazarika started his career as a correspondent for the New york times from the South Asia. It was during 1981 to 1996.

Sanjoy Hazarika was also a member  of   National Security Advisory Board.  He has set up a a Centre of North East Studies and Policy Research. He was also a senior Professor of the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi.

Sanjoy Hazarika's books are

  • Rites of Passage is about Border crossings, Imagined homelands,India's East and Bangladesh .
  • Strangers of the Mist: Tales of War and peace from Indi's North East.
  • Writing on The wall: Reflections on North East. Al these three books are opublished by Penguin India Books. 
  • Bhopal: The Lessons of a Tragedy

 Sanjoy hazarika is one of the most respected commentator on the North East areas of the country which is an imbroglio for the rest of the country. But unlike many other he is not the one who think that people of the region itself are only responsible for that situation.

Sanjoy Hazarika is a noted columnist too and writes regularly in several National dailies.
Recently Hazarika  has won the  Global citizen Award, which is previously given to persons like Nobel Laureat Dr Amartya Sen.  Sanjoy Hazarika's blog is A Bend in the River.

Sanjoy Hazarika is a columnist, Filmmaker Saifuddin Kitchlew Chair at the Acdemy of Third World Studies at jamia Milia Islamia presently.

With wife Minal Hazarika who had been always standing by the author and helping in all his projects. Minal died of an stroke back to years.  And his daughter Meghna too is a rock steady support for him. Daughter Meghna got married last year to Ralf, a London based Graphic Designer.

Sanjoy Hazarika's favourite pastime is boating in the mighty Brahmaputra.
